We’re deep into summer now on Florida’s Space Coast, and right now the days are long, the evenings are warm, and the light is doing things that make me want to be outside with a camera.
There’s something particular about the Space Coast in summer. The light shifts earlier, lingers longer, and by the time golden hour hits the beaches in Melbourne or Cocoa Beach, it feels almost unreal — that warm, amber glow off the Atlantic, the palms casting long shadows across the sand.
June is one of my favorite months to photograph here. And it’s not just about the light.
It’s sea turtle season.
From May through October, loggerhead sea turtles nest along Space Coast beaches — right here in Brevard County, which hosts one of the most significant nesting corridors in the world. The coastline is alive in a way that feels different this time of year. Families gather. People slow down. The evenings carry a quiet energy that’s hard to describe and easier to just show up for.
If you’ve been putting off a portrait session — a family gathering before summer slips away, a grad portrait, or just long-overdue photos of yourself — I’d argue there’s no better backdrop than the Space Coast in summer.
The golden hour light is exceptional.
In June, sunset falls close to 8:30 PM, which means we have the coolest part of the day and the warmest light. The sky after the sun dips below the horizon can go full rose and amber over the water. I plan almost every summer session around this window — it’s that good.
The locations are genuinely beautiful.
Melbourne Beach, Indialantic, Satellite Beach, the Indian River Lagoon shoreline — the Space Coast has more photography-worthy spots than most people realize. I love the quieter stretches, the ones that feel like they belong to just us for an hour. Whether we’re in the dunes, by the water, or somewhere unexpected, there’s always a frame worth making.
Summer portraits capture something real.
Kids in bare feet. Families in the breeze. That easy, unguarded look people get when they’re relaxed and warm and not thinking too hard about the camera. That’s the kind of honesty I’m always trying to find in a frame. Summer has a way of stripping away the stiffness.
I photograph families, individuals, and graduates all along the Space Coast — Melbourne, Palm Bay, Viera, Rockledge, Cocoa Beach, and the surrounding area. If you’ve been thinking about booking a session this summer, I’d love to hear from you.
Reach out here and let’s plan something before the season slips by.
