There’s a window of time each evening on the Space Coast that I look forward to more than almost anything else. It’s that last hour before sunset — when the light goes warm and low, and everything it touches seems to slow down a little.
We call it golden hour. And if you’ve never had your portrait taken during it, you’re missing something special.
I live and photograph here in Melbourne, Florida. I know these beaches — Melbourne Beach, Hightower Beach Park, the shoreline stretching south of Cocoa Beach. I’ve watched the light change over the Indian River Lagoon at dusk. I know the way it falls through the sea grapes, how it catches the water just right.
And I can tell you: golden hour light on the Space Coast is genuinely unlike anywhere else I’ve been.
The humidity in the air creates a softness. The flat coastline means you get a full, unobstructed horizon. There’s often a breeze off the Atlantic that keeps things comfortable, even in summer. And when that sun drops low, it paints everything — the sand, the water, the palms, people’s faces — in a color you simply can’t manufacture in a studio.
If you’ve ever looked at a portrait and thought, how does the skin look that warm and glowing? — golden hour light is usually the answer. It’s not a filter. It’s not editing. It’s just being in the right place at the right time.
For family sessions, it’s especially beautiful. Kids look like themselves. Parents look relaxed. The light is forgiving in a way that harsher midday sun simply isn’t — shadows go soft, colors go rich. And there’s something about that warm evening feeling that puts people at ease, which always shows in the photos.
I typically schedule evening sessions about 45 minutes to an hour before sunset. We use that full window — the warm golden light first, and then the softer, cooler tones as it fades. You get real variety in a single session without ever feeling rushed.
The Space Coast evenings have been particularly beautiful lately. We’ve had clear skies out toward the barrier islands, dramatic color over the lagoon, and that kind of stillness in the air that makes you want to stay outside a little longer. If you’ve been thinking about booking a session, now is honestly a great time.
If you’re based in Melbourne, Palm Bay, Viera, Rockledge, Cocoa Beach, or anywhere along the Space Coast — I’d love to make something with you. Sessions are relaxed, unhurried, and there’s no pressure to perform. Just good light, a good location, and an hour of your evening.
Reach out here and let’s find an evening that works. I’ll take care of the rest.
