There are places you drive past a hundred times before you really see them. For me, the Indian River Lagoon was one of those places.
I’d passed it countless times on the causeway — water stretching out in both directions, pelicans coasting low, the light doing something different every single hour. But it wasn’t until I set up a session there with a family from Melbourne Beach that I understood what that landscape could do for a portrait.
It’s not a dramatic location. It’s not trying to impress you. And that’s exactly why it works.

The Light Changes Everything
The lagoon faces west. In the late afternoon, the sun drops slow, and the water picks it all up — gold, orange, soft pink. There’s a warmth to it that you can’t manufacture in a studio. When you put a person in that light, something happens. The hard edges of the day soften. People relax. They stop performing and start just being.
That’s the moment I’m always looking for.
It Works for Almost Any Session
Whether I’m photographing a family with small kids, a graduating senior, or an individual portrait, the lagoon gives me options. The shallow water’s edge works beautifully for barefoot shots. The grasses and reeds make a natural frame. And depending on where you stand, you can find either a rich, layered background or something wide open and quiet.
I’ve photographed sessions along the Melbourne causeway area, near Ballard Park, and along stretches of the Indian River Lagoon Preserve State Park. Each spot has its own feel — and none of them feel overused.

You Don’t Have to Go Far
One of the things I love about living on the Space Coast is that beauty is close. You don’t need to drive two hours to find a location worth photographing. The Indian River Lagoon is right here — twenty minutes from Palm Bay, a short drive from Viera, just down the road from Rockledge and Cocoa Beach.
You could do a session after work and be home for dinner. That’s not a small thing.
What I Look for in a Location
When I choose a spot, I’m not looking for the most impressive backdrop. I’m looking for a place that lets the person in front of my lens breathe. Somewhere the light is honest, the environment feels natural, and there’s room for something real to happen.
The Indian River Lagoon does all of that. Every time.
