Okay so if you’ve lived on the Space Coast for any amount of time, you already know the Indian River Lagoon is gorgeous. But I don’t think enough people realize how good it actually is for portraits. Like — genuinely stunning in a way that’s hard to put into words until you see the photos.
I’m Shelby, I’m based here in Melbourne, and I’ve been shooting families, seniors, and all kinds of people all over Brevard County. And the lagoon? It keeps ending up at the top of my list. Every single time.
The light out there is actually kind of insane
I don’t mean that in an over-the-top way — I mean it literally. The lagoon has this quality where the water bounces light back in a really soft, warm way, especially in the late afternoon. You know that buttery golden look you see in really good outdoor photos where everyone’s skin just glows? That’s basically just… what happens out there. No heavy editing needed.
I started out doing street photography before I got into portrait work, so I’m always chasing real light in real environments. The lagoon at golden hour is one of those spots where it just shows up for you.

It’s SO much calmer than a crowded beach (and your kids will actually behave)
Here’s the honest truth about beach sessions in May or June: they’re hot, they’re crowded, and your kids are already thinking about jumping in the water before I’ve even picked up my camera. The lagoon is different. It’s quieter. There’s usually some shade. The water barely moves.
And here’s my favorite part — your kids will spot something. A heron. A jumping fish. A weird bug. And that split second of genuine curiosity? That’s where I get some of my best shots. Parents stop performing for the camera and start actually reacting, and that’s when the real stuff comes out. A real laugh. An actual look between you and your kid that you didn’t plan.
Those are the frames that end up on your wall. Not the stiff smiles.

When’s the best time to book?
Golden hour — that last hour before sunset — is my personal favorite for lagoon sessions. The light is gorgeous, it’s not a million degrees outside, and honestly it just feels magical out there. If you’ve got little ones who crash early, early morning works beautifully too. The light is soft, the air is actually cool, and the lagoon is usually pretty quiet.
For summer specifically, I always push people toward early morning or evening. Florida midday sun is no joke and I want you comfortable, not melting.
Who is a lagoon session great for?
Honestly, everyone. I love doing family sessions there, but it’s also amazing for senior portraits, couples, and solo portraits. There are great access points near Melbourne, Viera, Rockledge, and Palm Bay depending on the look you’re going for. We can figure out the right spot once we chat.
If you’ve been thinking about finally booking a session and just keep pushing it off — hi, I see you, and this is your sign. Let’s find a date that works, pick a spot, and make something you’ll actually love looking at.
Reach out here and let’s make it happen. I’d love to hear from you!
